German language skills to CEFR B2 level
GERM1010 | German Language Awareness and Skills |
GERM2020 | German Language B1/B2 |
This module is approved as a discovery module
This intensive German language-learning module allows students on the post-A Level route who successfully completed GERM1010 to further deepen the skills and knowledge required for successful oral and written communication in a variety of genres and social contexts. They will broaden their vocabulary and gain an understanding of variations in register, tone and style, which they will apply to their own work. Students will discuss a range of cultural topics and be prepared for the sort of paperwork and everyday challenges they will face during their year abroad. This module is designed for students who study German as part of their degree and students with a B2 level of the CEFR who intend to develop their German skills intensively. Students wishing to take a more communicative and less intensive approach to learning the German language are advised to consider modules offered by Languages for All (LANG-coded modules). Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
This module aims to further develop students’ German language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The objective is for them to fully achieve a B2 language level of the CEFR and work towards C1 competence. A wide range of learning activities allows students to develop a nuanced grasp of advanced German grammar, vocabulary, structures, style and register, focusing on language use in contexts. The module will expose students to a range of authentic materials and scenarios in order to hone their analytical and intercultural skills and to prepare them for residence abroad in a German-speaking country.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Demonstrate advanced awareness and grasp of grammar and apply various linguistic registers, styles and techniques to demonstrate accuracy, understanding and a range of expression
2- Communicate confidently, accurately and engagingly in both prepared and spontaneous oral German
3- Analyse with confidence a variety of different written and oral genres, e.g. articles and other texts, podcasts, lectures, films, books, etc.
4- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the topics studied and demonstrate progression in their general knowledge of culture and society in German-speaking countries
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1- Demonstrate awareness and understanding of self and others including different cultures.
2- Search for, locate, extract, organise, evaluate and use or present information that is relevant to a particular topic and genre.
3- Foster autonomous learning skills
4- Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration skills
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module.
